32 mobsters arrested in Italy

ROME - ITALIAN police say they have arrested 32 suspected mobsters with close ties to the Casalesi clan, a branch of the Naples-based Camorra crime syndicate.

Police in Caserta, near Naples, say the suspects were arrested early Wednesday in Modena, in northern Italy, and Caserta on charges of Mafia association and extortion. Two mobsters remain at large.

The Camorra, and in particular the Casalesi, have long shaken down local businessmen for money.

Those who refuse risk violence to themselves or their property.

Authorities have said the Casalesi are involved in illegal transport and disposal of tons of toxic waste from the industrial north to the underdeveloped south.
